22 years later, 1228 games, 704 wins, 3 premier league, 7 FA cups, 7 Community shields and 20 consecutive years in the Champions League - Arsene is leaving the gunners.
The Frenchman signed a new two-year contract last summer but has taken the decision to step aside in May.
The 68-year-old is the north London club’s most successful ever manager, having won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups during his lengthy spell at the helm. But there has been growing fan unrest at Arsenal, with supporters disillusioned over the club’s failure to win a title since 2004.
“I am grateful for having had the privilege to serve the club for so many memorable years.
“I managed the club with full commitment and integrity.
“I want to thank the staff, the players, the directors and the fans who make this club so special.
“I urge our fans to stand behind the team to finish on a high.
"To all the Arsenal lovers take care of the values of the club. My love and support for ever."
Arsenal majority shareholder Stan Kroenke described the announcement of Wenger's departure on Friday as "one of the most difficult days we have ever had in all our years in sport".
"Arsène has unparalleled class and we will always be grateful to him. Everyone who loves Arsenal and everyone who loves football owes him a debt of gratitude"
