Thomas Vermaelen is a surprise target for Manchester United

Louis van Gaal is set to make Thomas Vermaelen his first signing this summer at Manchester United.
Arsenal's central defender only has one year left on his current contract with the Gunners and last season found himself on the sideline, out for Arsene Wenger's first choice eleven.
Arsene Wenger is prepared to offer the Belgian international a new contract, but Arsenal are aware that Vermaelen does not want to spend another season on the bench. Both Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have signed long-term contracts with the north Londoners in the past three months.
Manchester United are in talks to negotiate a fee with Arsenal, after the World Cup, which is believed to be around £10million. Thomas Vermaelen hopes to move to Old Trafford and is already preparing to leave Emirates.
The new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal wants to strengthen United's defence and believes that the Arsenal captain can find his for under him at Old Trafford.
